Like Mechanical Engineering, chess focuses on enhancing critical thinking, problem-solving, and strategic planning skills. Join STEM the Gap Academy for a two-hour program that teaches girls the fundamentals of chess, including piece movements, names, and values. As we learn chess, we will explore real-life applications, drawing parallels between chess strategies and real-life scenarios. We will show how the skills learned in chess can be applied in various aspects of life, such as decision-making and planning. Parents are encouraged to download the Lichess application for future learning, and we will guide them on how to engage their daughters in learning chess through this platform. Chess is an incredible way to teach girls critical thinking and life skills. Course Fee: $30 (includes chess patch but not badge) No prior chess experience or chessboards are needed, as activities will be conducted using a virtual chessboard. Upon completion of the course, students will receive a Chess Girl Patch with a pawn charm. Additionally, girls will earn the Mechanical Engineering: Board Games for Daisies Badge, which can be purchased through the Girl Scout store. All STEM the Gap Academy virtual programs are hosted by the Academy and NOT by GSMW. Please note that STEM the Gap runs their own registration and programming externally from GSMW. Badges are not included.

In the Brownies Making Games Badge and Chess program, girls will learn about the history of chess, including its origins, the age of the game, and the medieval history of the chess pieces with Stem the Gap Academy. Through storytelling, they will learn the movements, names, and values of the pieces and how to read the chessboard. In this engaging two-hour course, girls will use their imagination to rewrite the history of the pieces, promoting values such as equality and non-discrimination by envisioning roles where soldiers can achieve certain statuses without bias. Like all sports, chess requires good judgment, critical thinking, and decision-making. Playing and celebrating wins and losses helps girls develop self-confidence, an important outcome of sports participation. Good sportsmanship is essential in life. As STEM the Gap Academy introduces girls to the fundamentals of chess, including piece names, movements, values, and basic tactics, they will also discuss how good sportsmanship promotes teamwork, respect, character-building, enjoyment, fair play, and a healthy reputation. Participants in this workshop will receive an enriching introduction to the game of chess. Even those familiar with the game will discover new strategies and insights. We are committed to fostering a community of girls who play and love chess, serving as role models for good sportsmanship and inspiring others with their dedication and respect for the game.
